Fundraising Honor Roll

Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.

~ Albert Einstein

When I was fifteen, I was fortunate enough to take a bicycle trip with 15 other teenagers through Europe for a month. I came back with the dream of someday bicycling across the country. This summer, twenty-three summers later, I plan to fulfill that dream.

That trip was the beginning of my love for bicycling. It seems just perfect that I ended up in one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the US. I enjoy commuting by bike, mountain biking and road-biking with friends. A cyclist experiences a location differently than whizzing by in a car or motorcycle. You smell and hear things. You seem more approachable, and in return communicate with more people. People are curious, amazed, confused and so they talk and ask questions.  It's an amazing way to travel and strive for that balance of living, working and playing.

As if the goal of bicycling across the country isn't enough, I hope to raise $25,000 to support the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Their work to combat childhood obesity is aligned to my organization, Cairn Guidance's mission, to create places of health and well-being where kids can win through education. I will be continuing my business as a national school health consultant as I ride. Striving for that balance of work and play... just on the road!

Many of our youth in the US are not as fortunate as I was. In fact, when I taught 7th grade health education in North Portland, many of my students were food insecure, which means they did not know where and when they were getting their next meal. Alliance for a Healthier Generation's Healthy Schools Program, which currently works in over 15,000 schools around the country, implements programs, policies and practices that address physical activity and nutrition in schools. I'm pretty passionate about their work and the people that work in the organization all over the country. In fact, I hope to meet up with many of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation's employees along the way!

All funds raised by Team Healthier Generation support the Alliance's goal -- to reduce the nationwide prevalence of childhood obesity, and to empower kids to make healthy lifestyle choices. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation works to positively affect the places that can make a difference in a child's health: homes, schools, doctor's offices, and communities.

If you are interested in specifically knowing more about this cause and why I choose it, please feel free to contact me at  And, please visit my travel blog at to get updates on where I am and how I'm doing. I sincerely appreciate your support of my trip and the Alliance's excellent work to address childhood obesity. Now YOU are part of Team Road to Rhode and Team Healthier Generation!
